Rest of Your Life - Balky Boyz
If there was a song to describe the feeling of looking forward, this song is it. “Rest of Your Life” by Balky Boyz is legitimately uplifting to listen to. With the band's own, self-described ‘mountain rock’ sound combined with a genuine love for playing together, Balky Boyz has made a song that reminds the listener to stop waiting for life to happen, enjoy the process, and move ahead. In the band’s own words: “Life doesn’t wait, so neither should you.”
Balky Boyz is a live performing band in New York’s Capital Region. They play regularly in the area and have a great time doing it. If I could describe the group after checking out their music and watching performance videos, it would be with three words: “a great time”. Watching them play, you immediately pick up on their good vibes, and can’t help but have fun right along with them. They really are a group that just calls on the crowd to dance, sing, and contribute to the energy of the room.

“Rest of Your Life” seems like a turning point for Balky Boyz. After 20 years spending time on different projects with other versions of the group, their lead singer, Uncle Rico, brought the core members back together. The song began with their drummer, Johnny Leggs, and their lead guitarist, Nikki Syxguns, coming up with lyrics and a chord progression. The band got together and added their own personal touches, letting the music come together naturally. When it finally came time to record, they decided to play through it as if they were at a live show, hoping to capture the true chemistry of the group. And in my personal opinion, this definitely comes through in the final product. The combination of a soulful harmonica, a grounding rock backbeat on the drums, and a driving acoustic guitar creates a wild, hopeful, and energetic sound that doesn’t feel tacky or disingenuous. I'm looking forward to more from them with this current lineup, and would love to see this track turned into a full album.
