Serpent Kiss by Dequila
Not many people can create a track that screams ‘phat bass’, but Dequila has done just that. “Serpent Kiss” feels gritty, greasy, intense, and focused, and would make for an awesome track to listen to while driving on the highway at night. Filled with an energy that pulls the listener forward, Serpent Kiss is a great dubstep track that is simply a good vibe. The track develops throughout, getting more intense as each drop passes, which is exactly what you want from the genre.
Dequila, a dubstep artist focused on experimentation and development, starts most of their tracks with a simple sound, often entirely unrelated to the track. They then spend a while, sometimes hours ‘squeezing the very essence out of that sound’ as they put it. This way, Dequila has separated themself from presets and creates something that is truly their own. This track is no exception. They found a vocal sample by chance on Splice and got to work editing it to their liking. The rest of the track was built around this experimentation, showing that Dequila can build these tracks out of basically nothing.

Their musical journey began at 6 when they discovered Zomboy, a longtime artist with popular tracks like ‘Nuclear (Hands Up) and ‘Lone Wolf’. Dequila cites Zomboy as being incredibly influential in the choice to learn how to make their own music. Eventually, this took them to music school, where they learned piano and saxophone, though this didn’t hold their interest in the same way dubstep did. Later on, they discovered FL Studio, officially starting their journey as a mainly self-taught musician.
Dequila’s soundcloud is almost a living history of their progress as an artist, as it hosts tracks from when they were just starting out. I’d recommend going to check it out, as Dequila themselves hinted at a big project coming soon.
