Facing Addiction with Alt-Rock: Reviewing “The Poison” by DownTheRabbitHole

The Poison by DownTheRabbitHole

Coming straight from Naples, DownTheRabbitHole is peaking their mics to challenge conventions, address real struggles, and avoid clichés. Stemming from a decade-long bond around music, Geno (guitarist, producer, & mix engineer) and LE. T. (lyricist & producer) pursue the spirit of social critique and non-conformity that makes the alt-rock genre what it is. Everything around DTRH is raw and unfiltered. Geno leverages his Conservatory background, managing the guitar composition, arrangements, production, and mixing, while LE. T.

drives the lyrics and creative direction. They then collaborate with trusted session musicians and technicians to bring the final vision to life. At every step of the process, DTRH is focused on creating authentic art that reflects their identity, allowing them to create music that is truly their own.

“The Poison”, DTRH’s debut single, perfectly captures this ideology. In the band's’ words, the single explores the “dual-nature of addiction, both emotional and chemical, and how both paths lead to the same sense of loss.” The lyrics and overwhelming sound of the track combined with the imagery in the cover art do wonders for the theme by “symbolizing the suffocating grip of dependency.”

Let's talk about the song itself. When you start the music, you are immediately hit with a raw, unprocessed drum track that forces you to pay attention. A few seconds in, you hear an amazing female voice that draws you in further, and an insanely distorted guitar that sings along with her. The chorus takes this idea even further, with the singer and guitarist joining together on the melody, but this time the singer's voice clips the mic, leading to a highly distorted sound from both singer and guitar. It creates this incredible, rough, and pleading sound that lends itself to the theme of the song, and deeply reminds me of other alt-rock songs like “Do I Want to Know?” by Arctic Monkeys or “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse.

DownTheRabbitHole is definitely a group to keep an eye out for. Their debut single has a ridiculous amount of energy to it, with a production value most bands would die for. In a month from now, DTRH will be dropping their next single, with an EP in the works as well. This music is right up my alley, and is definitely worth listening to long-term.
